Based on the true-life events of Canada's celebrated visual artist, Emily Carr, Totems follows Carr as she flees the suffocation of her home in staunch Victorian-era society. Carrying with her a traumatic family secret, she ventures deep into the thick forests of British Columbia in hopes of burying it. She lands amongst the indigenous Kwakiutl Tribe, causing them to deliberate over what to do with the unexpected interloper. As a result of her time with the Kwakiutls, Carr developed as an artist and created the pieces that would eventually make her famous. However, her success innately begs the question, "What is the line between artistic cultural inspiration, and artistic cultural appropriation?"
